Recreational cannabis will soon be for sale at dispensaries in Ojai.

The Ojai City Council last week approved allowing up to three dispensaries in the city to sell and deliver recreational cannabis in addition to medical cannabis, which is already sold legally in Ojai.

At their July 10 meeting, council members voted 4 to 1 in favor of the ordinance, which takes effect Aug. 9. Ojai Mayor Johnny Johnston voted against the proposal. He'd previously expressed concern that legalization could make Ojai a hub for recreational marijuana use.

Ojai allows only three dispensaries to operate in the city: Shangri-La Care Cooperative, Sespe Creek and Ojai Greens. All three currently sell medical marijuana and are expected to apply for a city license to sell recreational marijuana as a result of the law change.

The city manager is expected to release applications by the end of July, then approve them about two weeks after they've been turned in, according to Assistant City Manager James Vega.
